Ballgown Wedding DressesBallgown
The ballgown is the most traditional type of gown. It has a fitted bodice and flares out into a voluminous skirt. It can be worn with a crinoline or hoop skirt to help hold its shape. For girls who have always dreamed of a fairytale princess wedding, this is your dress.
Good For: This shape is great for pear shaped brides as it hides the hip area and emphasizes a small waist. It also lends itself well to having pockets built in.
Not Great For: Petite brides, as the volumonous skirt can overwhelm small frames.
A Line Wedding Dresses

This is likely the most popular silhouette. This type of dress is fitted through the torso and flares out from the waist into a fuller skirt.
Good For: Almost anyone!
Modified A Line Wedding Dresses
Modified A-Line
A cross between the flattering A-line and sexy Mermaid silhouettes, this style is becoming increasingly popular. This dress is fitted through the torso with the skirt flare starting anywhere from just below the waist to just below the bum.
Good For: Those who like the mermaid style but would like more movement and comfort. This style is a flattering compromise for brides with larger hips who want a figure-hugging gown.
Not Great For: This dress is fitted in the wrong places for those with a larger waist.
Mermaid Wedding Dresses
Given the honour of the sexiest silhouette, the mermaid dress is fitted through the torso and flares from knees, creating a curvy hourglass shape.
Good For: Those with a natural hourglass shape or gentle curves. Also great for brides who would like to accentuate their curves.
Not Great For: Petite brides, as the volumonous skirt can overwhelm small frames.
Sheath and Grecian Wedding Dresses
This simple shape is meant to just skim the body. It’s simple and elegant and can vary slightly in how fitted the overall shape is.
Good For: Petite or thin brides. It’s also good for shorter brides as it adds the illusion of height.
Not Great For: The full-figured – this dress will make you look heavier. It’s also very unforgiving and will not hide lumps and bumps.
Most often seen with an empire waist, this style of dress is similar to a sheath but with more volume.

Short Wedding Dresses
This less traditional length can be tea length (mid calf), cocktail length (just below knee) or even just above the knee. Don’t judge the dress by the length alone though! Depending on the style and fabrics used, shorter dresses can be just as fancy as long ones.
Good For: Less traditional brides, vintage themes, those with amazing shoes.
